Positioning your body during sleep can affect the way your back feels in the morning. There are three main sleeping positions. Read below to learn which one may be best for you:
Sleeping on Your Side
If you sleep on your side, bring your legs up slightly towards your chest and place a pillow between your legs. Avoid curling into a ball, which may cause your lower back to bend too far.
According to Mayo Clinic, this position may be particularly helpful if you have osteoarthritis in the spine, spinal stenosis ā a narrowing in the spine ā or hip pain.
Sleeping on Your Back
If you sleep on your back, position a pillow under your knees to help reduce pressure and maintain the natural āSā curve of your lower back.
According to Mayo Clinic, this position may be helpful if you have low back pain.
Sleeping on Your Abdomen
Most experts advise against sleeping on your abdomen. It flattens the curves in the lower back and keeps your head turned to one side all night long, which can distort the alignment of the spine in your neck. If you can't sleep any other way, place a pillow under your pelvis and lower abdomen to reduce the strain on your back.
According to Mayo Clinic, this position may be helpful if you have degenerative disease or a herniated disk in the central portion of your spine.
These are only recommendations and do not override advice from your doctor or therapist.
