Your Annual Physical In THREE EASY STEPS!

1. Get ready: Call for an appointment.

Most New Years resolutions, like losing weight or getting out of debt, take time. But getting ready for your yearly checkup is doable and crucial in preventing or detecting illness. Think of this visit as a yearly ritual. Schedule it during the month of your birthday or wedding anniversary.

  • When you set up your appointment, make sure your physician accepts your health insurance plan. You should feel comfortable and confident about your doctor.
  • Emphasize that you want an annual physical. Ask about anything you should do ahead of the visit, such as fasting (nothing to eat or drink) for two to 12 hours before your appointment (for lab work).

2. Get set: Do your homework.

Organize a system to track your health history. Keep records in a notebook or on a computer of:

  • Your previous health history
  • Your previous surgical history
  • Your family health history
  • Your allergies
  • A list of current medications

TALKING TO YOUR PHYSICIAN

Time with your physician is important, and limited, so be prepared. Bring a list of questions so you can cover all of your health concerns. Expect your doctor to spend 15 to 20 minutes with you.

3. Go!

Arrive at least 15 minutes early so you can fill out all of the necessary paperwork (insurance information, vital information, and past health history). Once you've finished, sit back and relax.

Your physician should do a head-to-toe physical exam including:

  • Vital signs
  • Neurological exam
  • Cardiovascular exam
  • Skin exam
  • Risk factor identification
  • Mental health review

Upping Your HEALTH CARE I.Q.

When it comes to health care, the more you know, the healthier you'll be and the more you're apt to save on medical costs, so check out the following health care quiz to boost your health care I.Q.!

Which of the following helps prevent heart disease?

  1. Controlling blood pressure
  2. Exercising regularly
  3. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables
  4. Quitting smoking
  5. All of the above
The correct answer is 5.

Controlling blood pressure, quitting smoking, exercising regularly and eating lots of fruits and vegetables have all been shown to help prevent heart disease.

To help prevent cancer, how many servings of fruits and vegetables should you have daily?

  1. Two
  2. Five
  3. Seven
  4. Nine
The correct answer is 4.

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, but ideally eight or nine, can help prevent cancer.

Which of the following is not a good way to fight germs?

  1. Using plain soap and water when washing and bathing
  2. Washing your hands several times a day
  3. Using plenty of antibacterial soap
  4. Using bleach and water for household cleaning
The correct answer is 3.

While cleanliness is next to godliness, going overboard on antibacterial cleaning products can do more harm than good. Using an excess of antibacterial products can actually cause bacteria in your home to become resistant to antibiotics. So, as with many things in life, use in moderation!

Which of the following is the "bad" form of cholesterol?

  1. LDL
  2. HDL
  3. NFL
The correct answer is 1.

While watching Sunday NFL games may up your blood pressure if your favorite team is losing, it's not going to increase your cholesterol count (unless you're overdoing the chips and dip)! The real culprit on this list is low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, which can clog your arteries and increase your risk of heart attack. High-density lipoprotein (HDL), is the "good form" of cholesterol, and can actually help reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. Monounsaturated fats (canola, olive and peanut oils, and avocados) and polyunsaturated fats (safflower, sesame, and sunflower seeds, as well as many other seeds and nuts) can raise your HDL levels.

Which of the following is America's number one killer?

  1. Cancer
  2. Heart disease
  3. Leukemia
  4. Stroke
The correct answer is 2.

While some people believe they are most likely to die of cancer than of a heart attack, the fact is that heart disease takes more lives than cancer. In fact, recent studies show that heart disease kills more women annually than all cancers combined. Be aware that not all heart attacks are sudden and intense. Some may come on gradually with fairly mild symptoms. Here are some warning signs to keep in mind:

  • Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath. May occur with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
